Mechanical Inspector Categories

Although different types of mechanical inspectors perform the same basic job functions, Oklahoma recognizes several distinct categories for the purposes of licensing. These categories include:

• Unlimited
• Residential
• Inactive unlimited
• Circuit rider unlimited
• Circuit rider residential
• Authorized provider

If you’re working toward a specific category, you may also obtain a one-year provisional unlimited or residential license that allows you to continue working while you complete the qualifications to obtain your preferred license.

A provisional license is not renewable, so if you fail to qualify for a mechanical inspector license by the time it expires, you will not be able to continue working as an inspector.

How to Obtain a Mechanical Inspector License

As you might expect, mechanical inspectors are required to have some industry experience, but these requirements can vary from one municipality to the next. However, you will need to pass the necessary testing to obtain your mechanical inspector license.

Testing is administered by the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI), and you may have to take one or more tests, depending on your preferred license category.

The 4A Mechanical Inspector One- and Two-Family Dwellings Exam features 50 questions covering topics like:

• Appliances, equipment, and distribution systems
• Chimneys, vents, and air combustion
• Fuel systems

This open-book exam references the International Residential Code. You may also be required to pass the 4B Mechanical Inspector General Exam, particularly if you want an unlimited license. This test consists of 50 questions on the following subjects:

• Air distribution systems and piping systems
• Appliances and equipment
• Venting systems, combustion air, and fuel systems

This open-book exam references the International Fuel Gas Code and the International Mechanical Code. You will have two hours to complete each NCPCCI exam, and you must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly to pass.
