With an electrical code enforcement/inspector license from South Carolina’s Building Codes Council (BCC), you play a key role in ensuring safe and functional structures for everyone. This license allows you to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with state, local, and national codes through reviewing electrical plans and conducting on-site inspections.

Once you have obtained a license, you must renew it periodically. Here’s what you need to know about renewing your electrical code enforcement/inspector license.

License Expiration and Renewal Guidelines

Electrical code enforcement/inspector licenses are valid for two years in South Carolina and must be renewed by June 30 of odd-numbered years. To qualify for license renewal, you’ll need to complete 24 hours of approved continuing education (CE) during the two-year period in which your license is valid.

You may report completed CE hours starting on July 1 of the odd-numbered year you obtain or renew your license and ending June 30 of the year it expires.

When you obtain your license, your first renewal period will likely be less than two years. For this reason, CE requirements for your first license renewal differ, depending on how long your license is valid, as follows:

  • 0 hours of CE for licenses issued 1 to 4 months before expiration
  • 4 hours of CE for licenses issued 4 to 8 months before expiration
  • 8 hours of CE for licenses issued 8 to 12 months before expiration
  • 12 hours of CE for licenses issued 12 to 16 months before expiration
  • 16 hours of CE for licenses issued 16 to 20 months before expiration
  • 20 hours of CE for licenses issued 20 to 24 months before expiration

All subsequent renewal periods will typically require you to complete the full 24 hours of CE to renew your license.

Approved Continuing Education

Code enforcement officers must participate in structured courses, in-house courses, or other elective activities approved by the BCC and submit a completed form for course approval signed by a provider’s instructor.

Elective hours are specific activities that enhance the knowledge or understanding of the codes and standards, processes, or techniques associated with the code enforcement profession. These can make up a total of 25% of CE hours, or up to six hours, and may include:

  • Participation as an International Code Council (ICC) or Exam Development/Maintenance Committee member
  • Participation as a South Carolina Building Codes Council or Code Study Committee member
  • Attendance at South Carolina Building Codes Council or Code Study Committee meetings
  • Presentation of an approved structured or in-house training course
  • Preparation and presentation of successful code amendments at the ICC level
  • Participation in courses required for a recognized certification maintenance program

If you pass any ICC exams during your renewal period, each may count for one hour of credit toward CE requirements.
