Cosmetology Continuing Education
In North Carolina, individual cosmetology licenses expire every 3 years and must be renewed between July 1st and October 1st. To renew, license holders are required to complete 8 hours of continuing education every year for a total of 24 hours over the 3-year cycle.
These renewal requirements apply to all Teacher, Cosmetologist, Esthetician, Natural Hair Care Specialist, or Manicurist license holders. While teachers need the same number of hours as other license holders, teachers must take at least half of their CE on topics relating to teaching methodology / communication. How do I Renew my North Carolina Cosmetology License?
In North Carolina, you are required to complete 8 hours of continuing education every year to renew your license. Licenses expire every 3 years. You may submit your renewal to the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners between July 1st and October 1st. Renewals submitted after October 1st are considered late. A total of 24 hours of CE must be completed during the 3 year period.

What are the required CE topics for my license?
Course Requirements
Individual License Renewal:

- At least half the hours must be completed in the cosmetic art licensure field
Teacher License Renewal:
- 8 hours per year
- At least half the hours must be completed on training techniques and/or enhancing the ability to communicate
Examples of acceptable CE hours:
- Learning a new skill from another professional
- Watching educational videos or tutorials
- taking correspondence or online courses
- Participating in a hands-on class
Exemptions
Those who meet these requirements and submit an exemption application are not required to complete CE
- 20 consecutive years of experience as a cosmetologist
- 10 consecutive years of experience and is 60 years of age or older
