Construction trades are integral to the success of any community. However, construction must be regulated to ensure that buildings are functional and safe. As a mechanical inspector or plan reviewer, you are responsible for ensuring that buildings comply with the Kentucky Residential Code and Kentucky Mechanical Code.

Before you can start your career, you must obtain proper certification from the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction Division of Building Code Enforcement. What are the requirements to obtain certification?

Types of Certifications

There are three types of certifications available for mechanical inspectors and plan reviewers in Kentucky.

A mechanical inspector of one- and two-family dwellings may perform any functions related to enforcing the mechanical requirements of the Kentucky Residential Code regarding one- and two-family dwellings, including conducting inspections.

The duties of a mechanical inspector general are similar, but they extend to any building or structure. They may also supervise other mechanical inspectors as well as carry out reviews of plans and documentation.

Finally, a mechanical inspector and plan reviewer may perform work related to the enforcement of both the Kentucky Residential and Kentucky Mechanical Codes. Their duties may include supervision, reviewing plans for compliance, and conducting inspections.

Completing Required Education or Work Experience

Kentucky has education and experience requirements for professionals applying for mechanical inspection and plan review certification, starting with obtaining a high-school diploma or GED. You must also submit proof of at least one of the following:

  • 2 years of experience in a position that requires reading and interpreting building plans and specs
  • 2 years of experience with building design and drafting duties in an architect’s or engineer’s office
  • An associate’s degree in design, building technology, or a construction-related subject
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, fire science, architecture, or building technology

Next, you will have to pass the relevant National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) exams for the certification you’re applying for.

NCPCCI Exams

The 4A Mechanical Inspector One- and Two-Family Dwelling Exam features 50 questions on these topics:

  • Appliances, equipment, and distribution systems
  • Chimneys, vents, and air combustion
  • Fuel systems

To become a mechanical inspector general, you must pass the 4B Mechanical Inspector General Exam, consisting of 50 questions on:

  • Air distribution systems and piping systems
  • Appliances and equipment
  • Venting systems, combustion air, and fuel systems

Finally, to become a mechanical inspector and plan reviewer, you must also pass the 4C Mechanical Inspector Plan Review Exam. This exam covers the same topics as the 4B exam:

  • Air distribution systems and piping systems
  • Appliances and equipment
  • Venting systems, combustion air, and fuel systems

All NCPCCI exams are open book. You will have two hours to complete each of them, and you must answer at least 70% of the questions (35) correctly to pass.
