Mechanical Inspector Requirements

Before you can begin your career, you must pass three exams issued by the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI). The 4A Mechanical Inspector One- and Two-Family Dwellings Exam includes 50 questions on the following topics:

• Appliances, equipment, and distribution systems
• Chimneys, vents, and air combustion
• Fuel systems

The 4B Mechanical Inspector General Exam comprises 50 questions on the following topics:

• Air distribution systems and piping systems
• Appliances and equipment
• Venting systems, combustion air, and fuel systems

Finally, the 4C Mechanical Inspector Plan Review Exam features 50 questions that cover the same topics as the 4B exam:

• Air distribution systems and piping systems
• Appliances and equipment
• Venting systems, combustion air, and fuel systems

All of these exams are open book and have a duration of two hours. You must answer at least 70% of the questions (35) correctly to pass.

Plan Reviewer Requirements

As a plan reviewer, you’ll be tasked with assessing mechanical plans to ensure that HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems comply with the Indiana Mechanical Code. You are responsible for reporting deficiencies so that plans can be adjusted to meet standards and obtain approval.

To become a mechanical plan reviewer in Indiana, you are required to pass just one test: the 4C Mechanical Inspector Plan Review Exam. However, many applicants seeking a plan reviewer license also complete the 4A and 4B exams. This opens the door to job opportunities that may involve both plan review and inspection duties.

Indiana has no specific experience requirements to become a mechanical inspector or plan reviewer. However, prior work experience in a related construction trade will not only help you prepare for your exams but also provide a competitive edge when you seek employment.
