Requirements to Renew a Plumbing License 

In Kentucky, licenses for skilled trades typically expire annually, and plumbing licenses are no exception. Whether you hold a journeyman or master plumber license, it will expire each year on the last day of your birth month. 

Before expiration, you must apply for renewal and pay a fee. However, to qualify for renewal, you must complete six hours of approved continuing education (CE). A suitable CE course will cover one or more of the following topics: 

• Business 
• Job safety 
• Kentucky State Plumbing Code 
• Subject matter directly related to the plumbing trade 

The state will send a renewal notice at least 30 days before your license expires, but it’s best to complete your CE requirements well in advance to make sure you have time to submit your renewal before your license expires. 

Consequences of Failure to Renew 

If your plumbing license expires, you are not legally permitted to perform related work activities, impacting your ability to complete projects and earn a living. Continuing to work without a valid license could result in penalties like fines or legal action. 

However, missing the deadline for license renewal doesn’t mean starting at square one. The state offers a 180-day grace period to submit your application, fees, and proof of completed CE requirements, although you will also be charged a revival/late fee. 

If you fail to complete your license renewal within the 180-day grace period, your license will be canceled. You can still reinstate your license after cancellation by meeting the original renewal requirements and paying all delinquent fees plus an additional revival fee.
