The expansion of technology impacts every industry, including skilled trades like construction and contracting.

One of the most exciting advances in the construction industry in recent years has been the growth of 3D printing. Specifically, some companies like Greeley, CO-based Alquist 3D are utilizing 3D printing technology for fast and affordable building construction.

The company recently put its services to the test by erecting a massive commercial concrete structure for Walmart in Athens, TN. The innovative, freestanding structure is one of the largest of its kind, signaling an eco-friendly shift for Walmart that could have positive ramifications for the future of commercial building.

Walmart Goes Big

When Walmart decided to build an addition to its retail structure in Athens, TN, the big box company knew it wanted a structure aligned with the brand’s environmentally-friendly initiatives.

For this reason, Walmart chose to partner with Alquist 3D, taking advantage of the builder’s experience with 3D robotics technologies and materials.

Mike Neill, Walmart’s vice president of development and design, said, “Walmart is always looking to innovate and leverage developing technologies, and we looked at several new building methods and companies for this project.”

Ultimately, the company found that Alquist 3D was ready to take on the project, which involved the construction of a massive 8,000-square-foot addition, with the freestanding structure reaching a height of 20 feet.

This marks the first time Walmart has used 3D printing for construction, and the addition is now one of the largest such structures in the U.S.

Despite the many benefits attributed to 3D concrete building, commercial and residential structures utilizing the technology remain rare. However, the usage by a business as prominent as Walmart could have far-reaching implications for the continued growth of the technology and medium.

Benefits of 3D Printed Concrete Structures

Although 3D printed concrete construction technologies are still in relative infancy, as compared to traditional building methods, it’s not surprising that this and other emerging technologies are gaining interest.

With a housing market plagued by low inventory, buyers clamoring for affordable housing options, and a shortage of construction professionals, technologies like 3D concrete printing that offer fast, efficient, and affordable construction are likely to become more popular.

This form of construction is considered eco-friendly, thanks to waste reduction and the potential for incorporating recycled materials. With accurate and consistent results, strong and durable structures, safer working environments, and easy customization, 3D-printed concrete structures have a lot to recommend them.

The Future of 3D Printing Technology in Building

According to Grand View Research, the market for 3D printed construction stood at $53.9 million in 2024, with an anticipated compound annual growth rate of over 111% by 2030, thanks to increased demand for rapid construction solutions.

This could be good news for skilled professionals entering construction fields or looking to advance their careers, as it has the potential to lead to increased building and job opportunities.
